Ambien (known sometimes as Zolpidem) is a medication used to treat insomnia for a period of time of up to two weeks. This medication is ocassionally prescribed by a qualified doctor in order to combate certain brain problems. This short acting pill, with hypnotic qualities, is a nonbenzodiazepine. Ambien pills are know for the fact that they begin helping the patient in a fast amount of time and its effect last for a brief period of time (not longer than 2 hours). In less than 15 minutes after being swallowed by the user Ambien can starts taking effect. Ambien potentiates the GABA (short for gamma-aminobutyric acid). GABA inhibits the brains neurotransmitters. So, by connecting to the GABAA receptors in the brain, Ambien helps by wherever the benzodiazepines exist.
This medication has not been 100% successfully proven to maintain the patients sleep, however Ambien is absolutely proven to be extremely successful effective at assisting a patient who needs help to get to sleep. Doctors commonly presribe Ambien as a muscle relaxant or anti-convulsant. Its beneficial effects begin to take effect about ten to twenty times the volume that is recommended to sedate sometime. This is the main reason that means that Ambien has not been approved to be prescribed to act as a seizure prevention medication or to help with muscle relaxation. Large dosages such as this can lead to a number of different unwanted side-effects such as amnesia and hallucinations.
